PhotoShop Contest: The Anti-Doula Sign in the Utah Obstetrician’s Office

You’ve probably seen this sign:

It’s obnoxious. It’s anti-woman. It made you uncomfortable. Maybe you shrugged and thought, “Well, better to know that he doesn’t give a crap about the science behind continuous support in labor before you’re actually in labor.” Because you know… anything besides someone in a white coat or scrubs performing a procedure on a woman to make birth happen can be dismissed as anti-science woo.

The sign is begging to be spoofed and that’s where YOU come in.

Edit this photo and post it to your web site, blog, Facebook, twitpic or a photo storage site (like Photobucket), copy and paste the URL in the comments and I will post it on this blog entry for all to enjoy. If you’re having trouble uploading it, e-mail it to unnecesarean *at* gmail.

The winner (to be judged by me after 1 (one) margarita) will receive a copy of the The Birth Partner by Penny Simkin. A copy will also be mailed to the Aspen Women’s Center in Provo, Utah, courtesy of “The Entire Internet.”

Deadline is Saturday at noon (Pacific). And, yes, I’ll ship internationally.

Go! Here’s a blank…

You're too good, Jill. :-) I can't wait to see these babies.

That looks a lot like a marijuana plant in the bottom right hand corner.Iguess then you wouldn't feel the need of doula support !

Hi all,

Squarespace doesn't automatically link URLs in the comments or allow for embedding (boooo). I just copy what you paste, open a new window, paste the URL, retrieve pic, and post on the blog entry.

I haven't seen the sign - do you have a clickable one that will expand the original photo?

November 5, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterEG

Oh no! I thought the thumbnail opened up the larger sign. Fixing that...

November 5, 2009 | Registered CommenterJill--Unnecesarean

Allahu Akbar you all are so creative I busted at the seams with the first sign :) Keep it coming, this is great! I hope the clinic enjoys their gift copy of the book!

November 5, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterJessi

ok, I couldn't resist...

http://picasaweb.google.com/jcbecher/Really?feat=directlink

I had one better before this one, but I somehow lost it w/o it saving then I couldn't remember exactly what it was I wrote. :( And I'm not 100% sure about the spelling thing, but with the "h" - I do know it doesn't show up in the online dictionary.

November 5, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterChristina

(By the way, I’m not sure that I’m reading this right. Is this an anti-fertility treatment statement? If so, it goes bye-bye. Thanks in advance for clarifying.)

My thoughts are a satire of how, if they won't accept certain types of childbirth methods, they also wouldn't accept any "natural" pregnancy initiations so the entire process from conception to delivery would be entirely under the control of the office.

Just wanted to add, that I wrote a review over at http://www.insiderpages.com/b/4658685094 for the Aspen Women's centre. This is what I said:

"Practice not based on Evidence - disappointed.

by Rebecca L. 1 Judd Thomas E Md - Aspen Women's Ctr
I was really put off by the sign! Evidence based research backs up the benefits of having a doula, so I was immediately able to judge that none of the staff or doctors at the centre practice evidence based medicine. That is far to risky for me and my precious unborn child! So I ran a mile! Scary scary place to have a baby!"

November 5, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterRebecca

Tina, thank you!! I thought so but I just wanted to check to make sure I was "getting" it.

November 5, 2009 | Registered CommenterJill--Unnecesarean

I think Elizabeth should win. I laughed my a** off. Great job girl! I love all of you for supporting natural births. Way to go and lets keep spreading the word.

November 5, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnita

I love this, Tina! Before you know it, our culture will forget how to give birth naturally!

November 5, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAbby J. Kinne

I posted mine to your wall on Facebook, but I will post the link again here! http://www.facebook.com/pages/Sacramento-CA/BirthYourWayOrg-Childbirth-Education/141435235973?ref=ts#/pages/Sacramento-CA/BirthYourWayOrg-Childbirth-Education/141435235973?ref=ts

This is soooo funny! PLEASE tell me you are also going to send Apsen a copy of all these spoofs? That'll teach them something.

November 5, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMartha

that sign immediately made me think of the monty python life is beautiful birth/hospital sketch! i wanted to embed that video on a picture of the sign and submit it, but alas i'm not able to make it work.

November 5, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterKC

Jill ~ My boyfriend has been in IT for 14+ years and he is a tech geek and he wanted me to personally tell you that your sign is the funniest use of that old video game slogan he has seen in his many years! He says it's "funny as hell'. ;-)

November 5, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterKathy

FANTASTIC! :).. You've all made my day...

November 5, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterTammy

Yay! I knew there were some O.G. internet nerdz here. I used to spend too much time on Fark when I was a young 20-something. I keep thinking of old memes and Fark cliches and wondering if anyone would get the joke.
