Monday Open Thread
By Jill
Today’s open thread is hosted by Sam Cooke because I just found a ton of mp3s that I downloaded in or around 1999 and I’m really excited. RIP, Sam.

Hey, I’m behind on reading so if you wouldn’t mind linking to something good that you’ve just written or something that you’ve recently read that you think I should read, please go for it.
Happy holidays and such.

Happy Monday!
I posted this on your FB wall, but if you're behind on your reading, maybe you missed it. I wrote the story of my recent HBAC:
http://godmadehomegrown.blogspot.com/2010/12/eliora-graces-birth-story.html
Actually, she was born at my midwife's house. It wasn't exactly as we had planned, but it is quite the story!
I hope you like it!
:)Tiana
Congrats on your HBAC, Tiana!
I'm excitedly awaiting a birth-- my first doula client is due tomorrow. Tomorrow is also cosmically special or some shit because it is the solstice, lunar eclipse and full moon all at once. Maybe the baby will come out all grown up with long hair and rockin' on the sax.
Also, the office holiday treats are killing me. Jan 1 can't come soon enough.
Hope to catch the radio show later!
It's funny that you mention the lunar eclipse, Rachel. All three of my HBAC babies have come on full moons. The most recent was a "blue moon".
Congrats Tiana on your HBAC!
I'll post a link, I wrote something about circumcision recently and, while not fully germane to this blog it's at least related and people seemed to like it. http://tigaseren.blogspot.com/2010/11/circumcision-and-common-sense.html. btw Jill I haven't forgotten about your offer to post my most recent pregnancy and birth fiasco and I will get it to you eventually.
A great post about dads was shared on FB and is very worth the read:

Another Rachel: SERGIO!
Tiana, I'm glad you reposted here. Congratulations on your birth! Your baby is adorable. :)
I'm studying for my epidemiology final - the chapter on screening - and wishing I were reading this instead:

I can't even remember who tweeted about it this past week ... s'pose it might have been you, in which case, woops. :)
Loooove Sam Cooke. He died way too early. Thanks for the blast from the past!
I was going to make an "OBs should try a little tenderness" joke, but apparently that's Otis Redding. R&B fail. I guess you could insert "A Change is Gonna Come," but the song is just to poignant for puns.
Courtroom Mama, my favorite song of his is Bring It On Home to Me, so...
Birth Sense knocks it out of the park as usual with "What NOT to Say to a C-section Mom":

Isn't finding old digital stuff super exciting?? I found a bunch of old saved e-mails from like, 1995 and it's breaking my heart not to be able to open them (they're on, god forbid, a floppy disk so even if I can find a floppy disk drive and a program that can open them, I don't know if the data is still good. But the label does not lie, I know I saved them on there and just finding them was a thrill!)
Rebecca, when I've come across old papers, I always hope to see evidence that my writing has improved over time but alas...
I worry about these 4,857.245 pictures of my kids. i am terrible about printing them up, though I know that it's only a matter of time before the technology become obsolete.
If you truly love Sam Cooke, please check out my book about his life, music, and death from my family's perspective:

Be blessed,
Erik Greene
The general consensus I've heard is that preservation requires constant vigilance, i.e. you have to convert your files regularly to the next generation of technology lest the hardware and/or software to open them become too obselete (my poor lost e-mails on floppy disk from CompuServe!)
Kathy...
Just followed your link and it made me cry... Thanks for posting that, I needed the reminder that there are still good men/Dad's out there.
@Rebecca: THANK YOU for posting that link. I wished I could have printed out a ream of that article and passed it out to people during the months following my son's birth. Next time I'll be prepared ;)
Does anyone ever feel like OBs (in general, not all of them) are becoming afraid of vaginal delivery?
I made a vow not to miss Monday Open Thread, but did it any way. So what's on my mind? Inductions. Why, because it seems a hell of a lot of women on my pregnancy boards is having them. One case is really distressing. A lady asked for positive stories about inductions, because all she hears is negative..she wanted to be reassured that her doctor, who told her it's best and easiest for her to just have one at 38 weeks because that's what modern women do, is doing the right thing. She wanted to hear successful stories of induction. Many women were advising her against non-medically indicated inductions, but many other women were questioning her story, because NO doctor would dare induce for such trivial reasons. That is the part that scares me. These women who just can't wrap their heads around the truth of what happens to other women every day. Somehow these women must be misunderstanding their doctors, or not knowing that the doctors have good reason. Others defend the doctors to the bitter end..while others just think these women are making up stories. It's so disheartening.
