Just have to say - got to help a mama advocate for herself this weekend. She went in for an unwanted and unnecessary induction simply because she has Type 1 diabetes. Mama didn't really want it, but the doc's scare tactics were effective nevertheless. Doc wanted to use cytotec and mama talked her down to starting out with cervidil. Doc's parting words were - "We can give it a try, but it'll take forever." 7 hours later without anything else besides that first dose of cervidil - no Pit, no IV - mama pushed out a beautiful healthy perfect baby girl. All on her own. Doc's comment, "I've never seen cervidil do that before."
I'm looking forward to this. There was an interesting article in the KevinMD blog earlier today or yesterday about defensive medicine in the emergency department. It's always interesting to me to see where reforms in birth practices can make common cause with other areas of health care.

sounds like the doc should have said: I've never seen a vagina do that before.
