Ohio Low-Risk, First-Time Cesarean Rates by Hospital, 2008
Originally appeared on January 5, 2010, sans historical data graph.

The Ohio Department of Health has released hospital-by-hospital data on 2008 primary cesarean sections. 13,517 of the 49,879 low-risk, first time mothers in Ohio in 2008 gave birth by cesarean section for a state total of 27.1 percent.
Under the section Hospital Performance Measures Explanations and Information on the web site, the measure called “C-section for moms having their first baby with no complications” or “Cesarean Section (C-section) for Low-risk First Births” is explained as follows:
This score tells you the percent of babies delivered by C-section to moms having their first babies with no complications (i.e., babies was not breech, delivery was at full-term and mom was not having twins or multiples)
This information is important because c-section delivery is associated with an increased risk of postpartum (after delivery) maternal death when compared with vaginal delivery. Also, women who have C-sections are at an increased risk for fatal blood clots, infection, and complications of anesthesia. Some hospitals now have C-section rates over 50%. The goal should be to manage the fist delivery well, so it can result in a vaginal delivery and avoid repeat C-sections in future births. Research has found that many of these C-sections can be related to inducing labor and early admissions.
Lower percentages are better.
Total cesarean rates by hospital are not available on the Ohio Department of Health web site.

WOW. The hospital (Good Samaritan) I gave birth in in november is 29%!!! So weird, they have a midwife office as part of the hospital, and they are AMAZING. I completely loved them (except for one out of four) and I had a totally unmedicated natural water birth at that hospital and no one gave me any trouble (they did great with breastfeeding only too.) strange! I always thought it was a really great hospital to birth in. I wonder if it could have anything to do with it's location. It's in the poorest area of a very poor city. I've read there is a correlation between those things..
Also surprising to see another hospital in this town that you've mentioned on this site, Miami Valley Hospital for a huge pit-to-distress lawsuit only has a 6% rate. I thought that hospital was terrible! outside of their attached birthing center.
This list turned my Dayton-birthing world upside down!
I
What a great idea to break out the low-risk births (since that's always the claim - "We do more high risk so our c-section rate is higher") Not that this necessarily catches pre-eclampsia, gestational diabetes, etc. but it's a good start.
Thanks for posting this again. The rates of my local hospitals disgusts me, especially since most of them have VBAC bans. :-(
@ Ameya - one reason why c/s rates are higher in poor communities is because the women in those areas are more likely to be "good girls" and do what they are told. :-(
I think the Miami Valley figures are a bit dubious. They have included the birth centre figures in the total figures for the hospital. What would tell a better picture is if they gave the C-section rate for the L&D floor on its own and then Family Beginnings as a separate line. Doesn't add up to me.
