Virginia Health Information publishes an Obstetrical Services Guide for the public with rates of cesareans, VBAC and episiotomies, intervention rates of individual physicians plus length of hospital stay and average charges. The 2006 information therewithin is outdated but the state willingly shares utilization data with the public upon request.

Wow. The hospital I had my Cesarean at is actually below the national average. Not by much though (Rockingham Memorial). Sad that we see a number like 28.8% and think it's "low!" :(

It's very disturbing to see Hampton Roads' numbers. I knew our rates were high; I'm fairly certain some of these rates are even higher. It's disgusting to say the least. Our ICAN chapter is new and it breaks my heart that the need is so great. I can only hope that women continue to educate and empower themselves before it's too late. Take back your birth!

I had my unnecesarean in a VA hospital in 2009.

Total c/s rate: 43.6%
Total primary c/s rate: 25.8%

And people wonder why I'm home birthing this next one.

Melissa, exactly. It should be a woman's decision. Rapidly increasing cesarean rates limit a woman's chances of being able to choose a vaginal birth in a hospital if that is what she feels is best for her body and her baby.

"Sigh" is right but good information to have. I wish California would mandate the publication of honest numbers from our hospitals but I have not seen anything close to this. An overall rate of 34.8% is just way too high. There are so many obstacles to reducing these numbers but we have to keep plugging away. Thanks Jill, for all you do. Dr. F
