Welcome to this week’s open thread! I am still recovering from my whirlwind trip to the Push Summit in North Carolina this weekend. I’m afraid that I brought Southern humidity back up North with me.

How was your weekend? Anything going on out there?

I am proud to announce that a new East Texas Birth Network is in the works along with one for the entire state. And an East Texas ICAN chapter is coming soon as well :)

I love birth, I love being a doula, and I want to do more, but I am wary of going through the medical training necessary to become a CNM. On the other hand, it might be good to work within the system to change it? I have no idea what to do, and would love to hear from those who are already midwives what it is really like to go through CNM and CPM training and what the strengths and weaknesses of both approaches are. Thank you lovely birth activism community!

Caitlin, you should check out Navelgazing Midwife's blog, then. I can't link it because my work thinks it has nekkid people in it, but if you Google her name it comes up. She has done both CPM and CNM as a I recall.

Caitlin, the best advice I got about considering CNM vs. CPM is that each group of midwives has a lot of battles to fight...the main difference is, which battles are you most willing to deal with? They are different for each group, and you should become very familiar with what they are if you are thinking about which route to pursue.
