While researching 2012 Kentucky cesarean rates on the Kentucky Hospital Association's highly transparent Inpatient Database, a pattern of charges for both cesarean and vaginal deliveries that were far in excess of the Kentucky state average caught my eye.
The charges at one hospital, Paul B. Hall Regional Medical Center in Paintsville, defy any possible explanation, except possibly that Paul B. Hall Regional Medical Center is owned by Florida-based Health Management Associates.
The tables below display the following:
Top three median charges for childbirth in Kentucky hospitals in 2012
Paul B. Hall Regional Medical Center's charges for uncomplicated vaginal birth, 2006-2012
Paul B. Hall Regional Medical Center's charges for a cesarean section with complications, 2006-2012
